The power of email heatmaps lies in their ability to transform the way we approach email marketing. By visually representing how recipients interact with your campaigns, you can gain valuable insights and make informed decisions that lead to success. With their aid, it's easy to identify trends and patterns.
View the email heatmap report
To see a heatmap for a chosen email navigate through the email channel dashboard to the List of emails report widget. When you find interesting data, such as unique or gross clicks, and want to learn more about it, click on the email name. You'll see a link to the heatmap.
Click on it and it will open in a new tab. You will see this view:
Options menu
You will find a set of icons in the upper right corner that provide you with additional abilities.
- Reload
- Hide/show filters
- The three dots icon, from which you can:
- Clear cache and refresh your data.
- Create a report by clicking "Download". You have the option to select between two types of files: PDF or CSV.
- Schedule delivery with a specific recurrence to a chosen mailbox.
- Reset filters to their default value.
- Check and change your time zone.
- The folder icon allows you to choose a different dashboard or report. You can also access the email heatmap from the folders. Click on the folder icon to expand the navigation, then Shared > Insights > Channel Performance > Email > Email heatmap. Keep in mind that you will be required to provide a Mailing ID for a chosen campaign in the filters section to see results.
Filters section
Use the filters to display heatmaps for a campaign you're interested in.
- Time - you can adjust the timeframe to display data from the past 7 or 14 days, the current month, quarter, or year. The time range selected in the filters section will also affect the email heatmap results.
- Show bot clicks - bot clicks are excluded from reports by default, but it is possible to include them if desired.
KPI tiles
Each KPI tile contains information about the specific period for which the data is presented.
- Sends
- The total number of emails that were successfully sent by the email service provider or system. This includes all emails that were successfully delivered, as well as any that bounced, or were filtered out.
- Undelivered
- The number of email messages that were not delivered in the period selected in the filter.
- Clicks (unique)
- The number of individual recipients who have clicked on your email links, excluding multiple clicks from the same recipient.
- Total clicks
- The number of clicks on a link in an email, regardless of how many clicks were made by a single recipient.
Note: You may notice discrepancies in unique and total clicks between the heatmap and email channel dashboard KPI tiles. The heatmap counts clicks by link, while the email channel KPI tiles count overall clicks.
Interacting with the heatmap
A color gradient will appear on email elements that the user interacts with. The color will depend on the number of clicks. Blue is associated with "cold" and red with "hot" clicked zones.
To view engagement data for specific email elements hover your cursor over different sections of the heatmap.
Click tracking
Click tracking shows which links within your email received the most clicks. This helps you understand which content or calls to action are most effective. When you hover over the highlighted link, you will be able to see some extra information. This includes the exact URL, as well as two values. The first value is the number of unique clicks - that is, how many individual users clicked on the link. The second value represents the total click count, regardless of how many times the link was clicked by the same person.
Creating alerts
You can set alerts and get an email notification whenever a metric reaches or exceeds a specific value. How to schedule an alert? Click on the bell icon in the upper right corner of the heatmap to display a popup.
From the popup, you can set the conditions you’re interested in, and choose where to send the alerts and how often. Click the Save alert button when ready.
