You can create alerts that provide email notifications when critical metrics exceed user-defined thresholds. Use alerts to monitor activity around important Top Line, Top Pages, Referring Sites, and Product Categories metrics.
When you create an alert, you choose who receives the notification and how often it is sent. You can send an alert only to yourself or to others, including members of your organization who do not have access to Digital Analytics. You can alert managers and other key personnel who might not always be logged in to Digital Analytics when significant changes occur in metrics that they care about. The text-based email notifications can be received on any desktop or mobile device that has an email address. If an alert indicates a problem or opportunity that requires immediate action, it can be sent daily. If an alert indicates a less urgent issue, it can be sent weekly.
To create an alert, click Create alert in the Alert Manager window. The Create alert modal opens where you can give the alert a name and description. Give the alert a name and description that describe the alert condition and why it is triggered.
In the Conditions box, select a report for the alert: Referring Sites, Top Line Metrics, Top Pages, or Product Categories.
- All - alerts are fired when all specified pages for Top Pages, hostnames for Referring Sites, or products for Page Categories meet the alert criteria.
- Is not any - alerts are fired when none of the specified pages for Top Pages, hostnames for Referring Sites, or products for Page Categories meet the alert criteria.
- Is any - alerts are fired when any of the specified pages for Top Pages, hostnames for Referring Sites, or products for Page Categories meet the alert criteria.
If you want to create a site-wide metric alert, select Top Line Metrics. To configure the alert, select a metric and condition that triggers the alert. For example, if you want to trigger an alert when two or more page views occur in a day, you might use the following configuration:
Apply to: Top Line Metrics When: Page Views Operator: Greater than Value:1 Compared to Pageviews
In this example, alerts are monitored for an absolute value of more than one-page view per day.
You can also monitor alerts for a percentage of change overtime periods. For example, to trigger an alert when the number of today's page views is 50 percent greater than the average number of page views for the past 7 days, configure the following:
Apply to: Top Line Metrics When: Page Views Operator: Greater than Value:50 Compared to % of 7-day Avg.
You can compare against percent changes from the following time periods: the same day last week, the average for the same day last week and the previous week (and the previous two weeks, three weeks, and four weeks), the past 14-day average, and the past 28-day average.
When using percentage change, you can also specify a minimum absolute value. In the earlier example, if you added Minimum: 1000, the alert is triggered only if today's page views are 50 percent greater than the average number of page views for the past 7 days and today's page views surpass 1000 views.
In the Distribution box, configure the email message by specifying the email addresses of email recipients, a subject line and message, and the frequency for how often the email is sent - either daily or weekly. Use commas to separate email addresses.
To view alerts, both active and inactive, use the Alert Manager window. Alert conditions are evaluated every hour and compared to the past 24 hours.
